Alberto Badías, a young researcher at the I3A, university of Zaragoza, has won the prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis of 2020. He carried out a work around the simulated reality of the Spanish Society of Numerical Methods that values the multidisciplinarity of his work. Explains the large number of complex problems related.

Alberto Badías, born in Binéfar (Huesca), studied Industrial Engineering at the EINA of the University of Zaragoza. He is part of the Applied Mechanics and Bioengineering research group and researches in simulated reality. This refers to a computer being able to understand, reproduce and describe physical phenomena that pass around us, reports the Aragonese public campus in a statement.

The Spanish Society of Numerical Methods also values with this recognition that it has been able to explain in an informative way the problems it faced in the development of its thesis, without losing the necessary scientific rigor.

What was the objective of this thesis?

The thesis developed by Badías allows any user to observe the behavior of all these physical phenomena from a scientific point of view. That is, it provides quantitative information about deformations, voltages, velocities, flows or intensities. It shows your concrete values at the same time they are happening.

This thesis is about providing information that the user can not perceive directly with their senses. This is known as augmented intelligence. It puts at your service a series of tools that allow you to make decisions with greater capacity for knowledge or simply observe dynamic phenomena favoring their understanding.

To create this tool it is necessary to merge technologies that, although apparently come from different fields, their symbiosis produces a result impossible to obtain with each technology separately, says the University of Zaragoza.

“Augmented reality can be understood as the introduction of GPS in society”

Justification of the Investigation

Alberto Badías stresses that the goal of those engaged in research must be able to make life easier for the ordinary user. It must also provide comforts for society. Although it requires a great job, the person who makes use of this type of technology wants transparency and simplicity. Augmented reality can be understood as the introduction of GPS in society. No one wants to know how it works or the great infrastructure behind it, but we all use it on a daily and simple basis. And he considers this thesis to be a great advance in this regard.

Badías, who did a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, has been part of the I3A since 2015, in the AMB Group (Applied Mechanics and Bioengineering).

Currently, they work on artificial neural networks that respect the physical laws that are already known.
