In November 2019, Haizea González Barrio, graduated in Mechanical Engineering with a specialty in Industrial Manufacturing, defended her research at the University of the Basque Country. That investigation, ‘Methodology for hybrid manufacturing of turbomachinery integral rotary components in thermoresistant super alloys’ was led by Drs. Aitzol Lamikiz and Amaia Calleja. Both are professors in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has also just received the award for the Best Doctoral Thesis of the Society of Manufacturing Engineering.

“It has been an honor and an illusion to receive this award as a result of the important effort made at the beginning of my career as a researcher and teacher. Thanks to the support of my directors Amaia Calleja and Aitzol Lamikiz, as well as the director of the Center for Advanced Aeronautical Manufacturing (CFAA) Luis Norberto López de Lacalle, without whom it would not have been possible. In a year and in a situation like the one we have had to live, this type of news is always received with more joy, if possible”, says Haizea González. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the UPV/EHU and the CFAA.

Investigation Objectives

His thesis, focused on the industrial fabric of the area, analyzes new hybrid manufacturing processes within key sectors. Among these are the manufacture of aeronautical turbines, molds, matrices and prostheses. It offers solutions for manufacturing and repairing high-cost components using additive technology. “Let’s get the idea of a 3D printer, but in this case metal. Its objective is to avoid the waste of repairable parts through cutting-edge technologies, “explains the doctor.

Dr. Haizea González developed the thesis, which included a six-month stay at the University of Sheffield, thanks to a grant awarded by the Ministry of Competitiveness and Economy. In turn, it is part of a European H2020 project and in collaboration with powerful companies in the industrial environment, such as Ibarmia, a machine tool manufacturer. This application to the industrial sector is, together with the excellence of the work, the aspect that the jury has mainly valued.

Other awards

In addition to the prize for the best investigation, the Society of Manufacturing Engineering also awards three prizes for Master’s Degree Final Works. Two of these have fallen to the new engineers and currently researchers at the CFAA Mikel González, for ‘Design and validation of robotic cell finishing processes for aeronautical components’. This award also carries the special mention of AFM (Advanced Manufacturing Technologies). Gonzalo Martínez Pisson was also the winner, for his TFM ‘A robust procedure for the manufacture by machining of knee prostheses’.

“The COVID crisis has been complex in business and academia. These awards serve as a spur to young talents who have opted for manufacturing and machine tool technology. Betting on innovation is key for our country, “says cffa director Norberto López de Lacalle.

The Manufacturing Engineering Society

The Manufacturing Engineering Society is a non-profit association established in 2004. This society was created with a general purpose, both in its scientific and technical aspects, as well as in its application and industrial aspects.

Although it carries out its activities mainly in the Spanish territory, it has an international scope, with special dedication to Latin America and Europe. Currently in the SIF are represented most of the Spanish universities with activity in the field of manufacturing, as well as various Ibero-American universities. But the Society not only has partners in the university field but also includes the vocational training sector, as well as the industrial sector, institutions and technological centers.
