Very young patients and centenarians with venous thromboembolic disease (VENOUS TTE) that are included in the Computerized Registry of Thromboembolic Disease (RIETE) are the object of study of this research. It was carried out by the medical specialist in internal medicine of the Hospital Complex of Navarra (CHN) Beatriz Lacruz Escalada. This thesis, directed by the professor of the UPNA and doctor of the CHN Gregorio Tiberio, has obtained the highest qualification, outstanding cum laude.

Background to the Investigation

TTE is the third leading cause of cardiovascular disease after acute myocardial infarction and stroke. As the researcher explains, “centenary and very young patients are poorly represented in clinical trials with anticoagulant treatment, so the complications of the disease and treatment in these groups are unknown”.

Research Objectives

The doctoral thesis describes the clinical characteristics of the patients referred to above. At the same time, treatment strategies are explained. The incidence of complications is also evaluated in a follow-up period of three months. Finally, the possible factors associated with an increased risk of recurrence (recurrence of the disease), hemorrhage or death in centenarians and young adults are identified, the UPNAhas reported.

Conclusions

“Our study in centenarians reveals that standard anticoagulation induces only minimal side effect. However, the consequences of VTE in the centennial population remain extremely serious. The risk of dying from pulmonary embolism outweighs the risk of bleeding. Therefore, our data support the use of anticoagulant therapy at full doses in this population, “says the researcher.

In addition, the researcher indicates that special attention should be paid, in the emergency services, to women with dyspnea. Special care should be taken “especially if they take estrogen, since it is described that hormonal contraceptives are the most frequent risk factor ETV in women of childbearing age,” he says.
