The University of Costa Rica, also known by its acronym, UCR, is one of the most recognized in all of Latin America. In fact, it belongs to the list of the 5 most important public universities in the region. It is an autonomous institution. It was founded 80 years ago, on August 26, 1940. To date, its managers have contributed to the training of millions of professionals.

Careers

The UCR has 6 areas: Arts and Letters Area, Social Sciences Area, Basic Sciences Area. It also has the Agrifood Sciences Area, the Engineering Area and the Health Area. These in turn have their respective faculties. In fact, each one has more than 5 faculties. The University of Costa Rica is a campus that is divided into 3 areas or sectors used.

The first and most important, for the buildings destined to the faculties, has about 31 hectares. Further, the second sector has 25 hectares and is used for sports activities. And the last sector has 21 hectares, this being the youngest of all. The institution’s research centers are located there.

UCR methodology

The methodology used to carry out the degree thesis at the University of Costa Rica, UCR, is presented in 4 phases:

  • Phase 1 (Topic, Background and Justification, Theoretical Framework)

The subject or title of the thesis at the UCR must be related to the degree that the student is studying. It must allow the solvency of an existing problem. Or also the creation of a new way to create more and better models of a certain area. This must be accepted by the corresponding directive for subsequent execution.

For its part, the antecedents are the works or documentation used to give veracity to the thesis. These should be related to the job title. It is worth mentioning that the documents used as background should be as up-to-date as possible. In the justification, the benefits that the completion of the degree work would bring to the community are disclosed.

  • Phase 2 (Theoretical Framework, Problem, Hypothesis, Objectives)

The Theoretical Framework refers to the different theories used to create “the body of the thesis”. This is one of the longest chapters of all degree work. The problem is the section where the existing inconvenience and the possible solutions that will be generated with the completion of the thesis are disclosed.

Further, the problem needs to be limited. In turn, it must answer questions such as Are there sufficient tools and resources to carry out the degree work? Also, the hypotheses in the UCR, if they exist, are the possible solutions proposed by the student. Of course each of them must be answered, and detail those whose results have been beneficial.

The Objectives are divided into General and Specific, with them it is possible to establish the mission of the investigation. Also, the general objective is closely related to the topic. The specific objectives are the possible solutions or ideas that will be developed throughout the degree work. These allow determining not only the scope but also the limits of the project in general.

  • Phase 3 (State of the Question, Social and Academic Relevance, and Methodological)

The State of the Question refers to the latest studies carried out, related to the subject in progress. Social membership are the benefits that the thesis provides to society. Academic membership corresponds to the benefits generated by the degree work, which the institution will enjoy. This seeks to improve educational plans and encourage the student population. In the Methodology, at the UCR, all the tools and techniques used to carry out the degree work are cited. This includes the type of research, population, sample, and more. All the data presented here must be clear and never altered.

  • Phase 4 (Provisional Index, Provisional Bibliography, Schedule)

As its name indicates, the index is the line that allows ordering the content of the thesis. This is usually presented by chapters and they are numbered to contribute to your understanding. In the provisional bibliography, the sources used to carry out the project are cited. They can be taken from a magazine, a book or a web portal. It is relevant to clarify that the source of each one must be cited including the name of the author or corresponding link.

The schedule is the device used to detail the activities that will be carried out during the execution of the project. It ends with the tentative date of presentation. The schedule in the UCR is usually carried out following the parameters of the Gantt chart. Thus, not only the activities are described, but also the time of completion of each one of them (start and end).

Writing Format

Each chapter in the UCR must be written following the parameters established by the corresponding area. However, they share the same writing style for some sections such as the background. Such information must be written in “past”. For its part, the theoretical framework must be written in the present and the State of the Question in “today”. It will be necessary to respect the verbs used for each objective. For this, Bloom’s taxonomy will be used. The student is required to write according to his level of professionalism.

The work as a whole must have coherence and clear and legible information. At the same time, it requires writing in Arial font number 12, justified and single spacing. Once the project has been reviewed, it is printed, using white A4 sheet, and this in turn must be in optimal condition. The presentation of the thesis will be denied, if metaphors or words that incite hatred or distract the reader are observed in it. In the same way if the student misses the presentation due to minor cases. In such a situation only a severe medical experience will be taken into account.
