UNAL methodology

The methodology used to carry out the degree thesis at the National University of Colombia is presented in 4 phases:

  • Phase 1 (Summary, Introduction and Justification)

Once the title of the degree project or thesis at the UNAL has been established, a summary of it will be carried out. This will only cover half of a page, and in which the proposed inconvenience is expressed, in addition to the keywords that will lead to the conduct of the investigation. Then there is the introduction, a section where “an appetizer” is given, but still well detailed, of all the work in general. This also includes the existing problem and the possible solutions that will be handled to solve it. The next space corresponds to the justification. It must express the importance of the degree work, which will be so relevant not only for the issue raised, but also for the community related to it.

  • Phase 2 (Objectives, Background, Materials and Methods)

At the UNAL, the objectives correspond to the activities that will be carried out throughout the preparation of the degree project. It should be mentioned that these should not be confused with the schedule of activities. Also, the objectives are divided into General Objectives and Specific Objectives. The general objective allows knowing part of the existing inconvenience, and at the same time contributing to the development of specific objectives, which will allow finding the solution to the problem raised in the general objective.

The antecedents correspond to the works used as a guide to carry out the thesis. These will serve as the basis of the investigation and will contribute to its veracity. For its part, and as its name indicates, the Materials and Methods are the tools used to carry out the degree work. This also includes the type of research to be used, whether documentary or in the field, and the tools such as computers, pens and others. All these data are relevant for the completion of the thesis.

  • Phase 3 (Schedule of Activities, Budget and Funding Source)

The schedule of activities at UNAL must be presented in a Gantt chart, where the activities to be carried out to carry out the degree work are explained. Said graph must contain the title of each activity, and its subsequent duration. For its part, the budget allows to know the amount of money invested to carry out the thesis. This section should be one of the most detailed, it should include the name of the tool used, and its cost; and at the end, the total cost expressed in the national currency.

  • Phase 4 (Bibliography and Signatures)

This is the last section of the theses presented at UNAL. It must contain all the fonts used to carry out the degree work, they must be organized alphabetically. It will be necessary to sort them by their origin, be it from a book, an internet portal or a magazine. The research date, and of course the year of publication, should be added in the same way. This section ends with the signatures of the managers, implying that the degree work has been approved. This document must also contain the signature of the student (s).

Writing Format used at UNAL

The entire work presented at UNAL must not exceed 120 pages. Each symbol used must be detailed in a table where its definition is disclosed. The same happens with the spellings used, they must contain their title and that of their author. In case you need to highlight a paragraph, you can use the use of bold or italics, but this should not be exaggerated.

Antecedents must contain the title of the work used as a guide, the author and the year of its elaboration, it is worth mentioning that these must be the most updated possible, so as not to use erroneous information. The thesis can have either 3 or 6 chapters, in the same way these should be very well detailed, so that the compression of the degree work is the best. It is worth mentioning that the conclusions and recommendations should be cited between the chapters.

Final Recommendations

These are considered very important, since they express what the UNAL student has learned and the possible ways he recommends so that the aforementioned problem no longer causes havoc. The objective of these is to strengthen the investigation as a whole. Recommendations can be presented either as a reflection or focused on the thesis. In case of choosing the first option, it should be closely related to the planned theme so that there is total coherence.

Also, the degree work must be printed on white sheet, letter size, and these must be “impeccable”, without any erasure or scratches. Students must use professional language. The use of metaphors and / or words that limit the understanding of the degree work will be considered disrespect for the institution. The body of the thesis must be written in Arial 12. Furthermore, the margins to be used are: 3 cm on the left and upper side, and 2.5 cm on the right and lower side, and for their part, the paragraphs must have a single spacing .
